Maintenance

Website maintenance and support

A site is not finished at launch, it is just started. Dependencies age, integrations change their interfaces, content goes stale and performance drifts. Maintenance is the arrangement that keeps that from becoming a rebuild.

Problems this solves

  • Nobody has updated the site since launch and no one is sure whether that is a problem yet.
  • Something broke and the person who built it is not answering.
  • A payment or email integration stopped working after the provider changed their interface.
  • Small content changes wait weeks because they need a developer.
  • Performance has slowly degraded and nobody noticed until a customer said so.

Who it is for

Businesses whose site or platform is genuinely part of how they operate - taking enquiries, reservations or orders - and who need it to keep working without keeping a developer on staff.

What is included

Updates and security

Dependency and platform updates applied and tested rather than accumulated, so upgrades stay routine instead of becoming a project of their own.

Monitoring

Uptime and error monitoring, so a broken form or a failing payment is noticed by us rather than reported by a customer.

Content and small changes

An agreed allowance of content edits, new sections and small features each period, handled without a separate quote for every request.

Periodic health checks

Scheduled reviews of performance, broken links, redirects, structured data and indexing, with a short written summary of what changed and what we fixed.

What you receive

  • Applied and tested dependency and security updates
  • Uptime and error monitoring with alerting
  • An agreed allowance of content and small feature changes
  • Backup and restore arrangements appropriate to the project
  • A periodic written report covering what was updated, found and fixed
  • A named point of contact and an agreed response expectation

How we work

  1. 01

    Take over

We review what exists - code, hosting, integrations, access - and record it.

  2. 02

    Stabilise

Anything already broken or badly out of date is fixed first.

  3. 03

    Maintain

Updates, monitoring and agreed changes run on a regular cycle.

  4. 04

    Review

A periodic check and a written summary, with recommendations if something needs more than maintenance.

Performance, accessibility and search

Performance does not drift

Page weight, image sizes and third-party scripts are reviewed on the regular cycle, because degradation happens by accumulation rather than in one event.

Indexing stays intact

Redirects, canonical tags, sitemap accuracy and broken links are checked periodically, so a change made months ago does not quietly remove pages from the index.

Changes are staged

Updates and edits go through a staging environment before production, so the live site is not the place where problems are discovered.

What we build with

  • Dependency and security updates
  • Uptime and error monitoring
  • Automated build-time checks
  • Backups
  • Staging environments

Integrations

  • Hosting and deployment pipelines
  • Uptime and error monitoring services
  • Analytics and Search Console
  • Payment and email providers
  • Headless CMS

Cost and timeline

We do not publish fixed prices or delivery times, because scope changes both by an order of magnitude. You get both in writing, specific to your project, before any commitment.

What drives the price

  • Size and complexity of the site or application
  • How much change you expect each period
  • Whether monitoring and on-call response are needed, and how quickly
  • Number of integrations that need watching
  • Whether we built the site or are taking over someone else's
  • The state it is in when we take it over

What drives the timeline

  • How much stabilisation is needed before regular maintenance can start
  • Access to hosting, repositories, domains and third-party accounts
  • Whether documentation exists from the previous developer
  • How urgent the current issues are

Frequently asked questions

Yes, subject to a review first. We look at the code, hosting and integrations and tell you honestly whether it is maintainable as it stands or whether some of it needs replacing before a maintenance arrangement makes sense.

Substantial new features, redesigns and migrations are scoped as their own work. Maintenance covers keeping the existing thing working and making small changes to it, and we tell you when a request has crossed that line rather than silently absorbing it or silently dropping it.

Then a retainer is probably the wrong purchase. We can work on an as-needed basis instead, and we will say so rather than sell you a monthly arrangement you will not use.

No. The code and the accounts stay yours throughout. If you stop working with us, you keep everything and we hand over documentation.
